The winter coats to make you look and feel expensive – from £59 - The Telegraph
Now that the late summer heatwave is finally over, winter coat season is a go. You may have styles in your wardrobe that you return to year after year. But the sudden drop in the temperature is also a good excuse to assess any winter-coat shaped gaps in your collection.
So what's trending for winter 2023? Expensive-looking coats. The puffers and duvet coats that we all love to walk the dog in are all still valid, but let's face it, post-pandemic, we've all got lots of those. This year it is time to invest in a proper wool coat - be it felts, boucle, or herringbone. Quality coats are trending now, but will live forever in your wardrobe.
"This season at John Lewis we wanted our coats to feel elevated," says Queralt Ferrer, design director at the store. Ferrer notes that to get the stealth wealth look, though, you don't actually have to spend a fortune, and there are plenty of options on the high street for under £200. "We wanted our customer to be able to find the perfect pea coat, the best checked coat, a great wool wrap coat - all for a great price."
Here are our top picks of the best ones to invest in now…
The blazer-coat hybrid
Is it a coat, is it a blazer? In thicker-than-average tailoring fabrics and warm wool felts, some of the smartest coats on the high street this winter are sharp hybrid jackets. Choose from double-breasted styles with stand-out buttons, such as the hammered gold-look ones on this Jigsaw jacket, or go streamlined as per Hush's Jade style. The blazer-coat looks great with tailored trousers for work, or jeans and trainers at the weekend.

The chocolate coating
Rich brown is one of the most coveted colours this season. The hue lends itself well to coats - styling nicely with other shades of brown, as well as with blue denim, and chunky cream knitwear. John Lewis's longline wool-blend coat comes in at an excellent £129 price tag for its quality. Cos's toffee tone coat is double faced for extra warmth.

The oversized trench
The fluid trench silhouette was a hit on the autumn 2023 catwalks at Balenciaga and Bottega Veneta. Gucci's most-wanted look was, in fact, a seemingly simple combination of a striped shirt tucked into baggy jeans, with a loose and open beige trench on top. The highstreet is jumping on the trend too with Zara, Jigsaw and & Other Stories putting their spin on the oversized outerwear shape.

The statement shearling
This winter, the longline shearling coat is a headline-grabbing piece. Coach, Hermes and Chloé were just some of the labels that sent tonal longline shearling coats down their autumn catwalks. The cost of a quality shearling makes it an investment buy - but one that will transcend trends and live on in your wardrobe for many winters to come.

The maxi coat
There is truly no better feeling than complete comfort and cosiness in winter - luckily this year's best coats are designed to wrap up. Maxi silhouettes are everywhere - full lengths best served in suitably warm herringbone fabrics. Shoe choice is critical with this look - if you wear your coat all tied up, it'll be the only other visible part of your outfit. A pair of polished flats with a pointed toe would stop any "dressing gown" associations.
Wrap coat, £465, Ganni; Wool-blend coat, £189.99, H&M; Maxi-length coat, £169, Zara
The padded bomber
The classic bomber silhouette now has added warmth, thanks to clever quilting, brushed felt, or "puffer"-like elements. The idea stemmed from Khaite's autumn catwalk show, which paired cropped padded bomber jackets with long maxi skirts. The back view of Marks & Spencer's toffee colour hero style has a pretty gathered seam detail.
Padded bomber, £59, Marks & Spencer; Bomber jacket, £460, Filipa K; Felt bomber, £119, Albaray
The light check up
When it comes to checks this winter, the idea is to pile them on. Clash a checked coat with a scarf in a different pattern, or go all in on monochrome checks for an easy-to-style office look with impact. The point is to let the pattern do the talking. Tones of beige look particularly good this year - hits on the high street can be found at Jaeger and Uniqlo. Both of these checked coats are reversible - how's that for a two-for-one deal?
Padded coat, £109.90, Uniqlo; Reversible coat with scarf, £399, Jaeger at Marks & Spencer ; Amaya coat, £179, Hobbs
